Executive Director Greg Cendana visits Seattle Chapter of APALA

On the evening of Sunday, June 26, the Seattle Chapter of APALA welcomed Greg Cendana, Executive Director, during a chapter meeting at the Sun Ya Seafood Restaurant. When asked about his experience so far with APALA, Greg only had great things to say. “It’s exciting to see how APALA continues to be at the forefront of engaging the next generation of leaders and understands the intricacies of our multiple identities.”

The local chapter members were able to converse with Greg and get some insight into the upcoming 11th APALA Biennial Convention in Oakland, CA. The Seattle Chapter is sending more than 20 members to the convention this year. Greg also spoke to the group about some of the highlights of the convention this year: Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis serving as the keynote speaker, the launching of the Generations United mentorship program pairing students and young organizers with seasoned union leaders, and a labor march around Oakland.

“The Seattle Chapter served as great hosts and I look forward to coming back in the fall when you all host your Worker Rights Hearing. The highlights of my trip included having dinner with all of the chapter members and going bowling with all of the youth members. Thanks for all of your hospitality and the amazing work you do on behalf of APA workers in Seattle!”

More About Greg Cendana
Greg was exposed to the labor movement from a young age since his father is a mechanic at the University of California, David. While growing up, Greg remembers his father telling him of his experiences with his union, AFSCME 3299. While attending UCLA, Greg was recruited into APALA by Kent Wong, the founder of APALA in 1992, when doing an internship through the UCLA Labor Center with AFSCME 3299. In early 2010, Greg began his new position as Executive Director of APALA and is excited to be the youngest and first openly gay Executive Director for the organization.

The Seattle APALA Chapter thanks Greg for visiting the chapter and wishes him the best with his future as Executive Director.

Seattle APALA 12th Annual Dinner

On the evening of April 14, the 12th Annual Seattle APALA Dinner raised more than $8,000. The chapter hopes to send 35 youth to The National APALA Convention this July in Oakland, CA to gain personal experience with organizing campaigns around the nation involving Asian Pacific Islanders.

The event was held at the South Seattle Community College. APALA members Tien Vo and Mary Nguyen were the MCs of the night and welcomed more than 100 attendees of the dinner. There were more than 40 items for the silent auction including the big-ticket item – a gift certificate for a dinner and hotel stay at the Willow’s Lodge, which went to the highest bidder of $375 during the live auction.

The documentary film Chinese Expulsion Remembrance Project: What Will You Remember? was shown as the guests were eating dinner. The film brought together various people to discuss the history and effects of the Chinese expulsion from the Pacific Northwest in 1885 and 86. Pei Ju Chou from the International Examiner also spoke to the guests about the documentary and project on a personal level. For information about the project, visit www.examiner.org/cerp.

Spoken-word artists Mandy Yu and Henry Luke performed multiple pieces of original poetry as Andreas Baatz played the guitar. The guests were receptive to the wonderful performance by the trio. It was a great way to end the evening.
